VA/VE Mechanical Engineer

As the VA/VE Mechanical Engineer you will be responsible for designing innovative new products or modifying existing products to support running changes, TCP (Total Cost of Production), Cost of Quality, and VA/VE (Value Added / Value Engineering) projects. This person will work closely with the VA/VE Team, Sourcing, Quality, Product Management, Manufacturing teams as well as suppliers to develop and launch or revise existing lighting systems.

As a member of the VA/VE Team, you will report directly to the Senior Value Engineering Manager and will interface with other members of this team to maintain and/or continuously improve the overall value of product designs.  

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop LED fixture designs, including mechanical, thermal, and optical system designs for new products, product improvements, and value engineering projects.
  • Lead new product development from concept to launch. This includes defining product specifications, conceptual design, detailed design, component and material selection, simulation/FEA, prototype, design validation testing, safety approvals, and production implementation while meeting the product requirements and cost targets.
  • Support safety and performance compliance to meet third party certification (ex. UL, ETL, Energy Star, FCC, etc.)
  • Lead design risk assessment activities and drive plan abatement activities across functional team
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to peers, suppliers and customers regarding design, material specifications, testing procedures, and product quality.
  • Review products / develop ideation for cost out opportunities to support corporate TCP and VA/VE targets.
  • Perform tasks directly or work with others to ensure projects remain on schedule
  • Trouble shoot design, manufacturing and quality defects in parts and designs
  • Effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Prepare, review and approve Engineering Change Orders.
  • Lead projects through Stage Gate Review Process
  • Maintain current knowledge of new and emerging lighting technologies as well as the electrical engineering field.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently and perform other tasks as required.

Qualifications:

  • Engineering Degree from accredited institution (Mechanical Engineer preferred)
  • 3 - 5 years professional engineering experience
  • Professional work experience in consumer electro-mechanical product design. LED lighting fixture design ideal
  • Proven experience with structured Stage Gate process
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Self-driven and able to work under general project direction
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Able to handle multiple projects concurrently and function in a collaborative global environment
  • Background in SolidWorks required, Onshape a plus
  • Excellent computer skills with the ability to work in Microsoft environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Working knowledge or basic manufacturing and fabrication methods preferred, e.g. die casting, injection molding, extrusion, stamping, assembly, etc.
  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally (<10%)
  • Night/early morning calls required to interface with team and suppliers in Asia
