VA/VE Electrical Engineer

As the VA/VE Electrical Engineer you will be responsible for designing innovative new or modifying existing products to support running changes, TCP (Total Cost of Production), Cost of Quality, and VA/VE (Value Added / Value Engineering) projects. This person will work closely with the VA/VE Team, Sourcing, Quality, Product Management, and Operations teams as well as suppliers to develop and launch or revise existing lighting systems. As a member of the VA/VE Team, you will report directly to the Senior Value Engineering Manager and will interface with other members of this team to maintain and/or continuously improve the overall value of product designs.  

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and/or revise electrical product designs supported by complete documentation, electrical specifications, schematics, BOMS, wiring diagrams, instruction sheets, etc. while meeting the product requirements and cost targets.
  • Lead projects from concept to launch through Stage Gate review process, including engineering requirements, conceptual design, risk assessment, component selection, detailed design, validation, safety approvals, and production implementation.
  • Trouble shoot design, manufacturing and quality defects in parts and designs
  • Review products / develop ideation for cost out opportunities to support corporate TCP and VA/VE targets.
  • Perform tasks directly or work with others to ensure projects remain on schedule
  • Support compliance to meet third party (FCC, UL, ETL, CSA, ENERGY STAR, etc.) certifications.
  • Effectively collaborate with global cross-functional teams
  • Prepare, review and approve Engineering Change Orders.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to peers, suppliers, customer service, and customers as to design, mode of operation, component specifications, testing procedures, and product quality.
  • Maintain current knowledge of new and emerging lighting technologies as well as the electrical engineering field.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently and perform other tasks as required.


  • BSEE (Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering) from an accredited institution or 10+ years of field related experience
  • Strong electrical engineer aptitude with working knowledge in the areas of circuit design, power electronics and controls
  • 5+ years work experience working with power supply design; Solid State lighting a plus
  • Solid education and experience in power supply architectures such as Flyback, Buck, Resonant, Bridging, and AC circuits desired
  • Solid understanding of the theory and application of magnetics to inductors and transformers to achieve maximum efficiency desired
  • Design knowledge with FETs, MOSFETs, SCRs, TRIACs, IGBTs, Bipolar Transistors, TVS, etc. desired
  • Solid foundation in PCB layout, component placement and routing
  • Able to model and simulate complex circuits
  • Understanding of how to utilize basic laboratory equipment such as: spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, current probes, function generators, Labview DAQ, etc.
  • Possess an understanding of, or ability to research, applicable regulatory standards
  • Self-driven and able to work under general project direction
  • Excellent computer skills with the ability to work in Microsoft environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Able to handle multiple projects concurrently and function in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally (<10%)
  • Night/early morning calls required to interface with team and suppliers in Asia
