Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Risk and Regulatory Engineer is responsible for product liability risk management which includes litigation support, warranty, and risk assessment of product design and root cause analysis. This role is instrumental in helping to determine the merit of product liability claims and develop and implement a defense, settlement, and resolution strategy. In addition, oversee the regulatory landscape and manage the codes & product standards for the business. Strong interaction with Quality, Risk Management and Product Management is required.


  • With the objective of loss control and prevention, identifies, investigates and performs a thorough analysis of product liability claims
  • Responsible for reviewing information from a variety of sources to assess and identify factors that caused or contributed to alleged damages and injuries
  • Interfaces with Legal Counsel and Risk management team to develop defense strategy, provide litigation support and evaluate the monetary value of litigated claims. Litigation support includes product inspections, expert reports, participation in arbitration/mediation, legal depositions & trials
  • Under the guidance of the Risk Director, participates in settlement negotiations to achieve early resolution of claims
  • Collaborates with Legal, Quality and Sales to ensure appropriate Post Product Liability Recovery efforts
  • Serves as a resource and subject matter expert for legal counsel, risk management and sales regarding risk management/loss control/loss prevention strategies
  • Maintains efficiency, organization and accuracy in product design and processes documentation to preserve legal protections
  • Manages response to requests for information and documents related to claims and litigation management
  • Assist in the development and implementation of risk management programs that are innovative, relevant and measurable
  • Develop broad product knowledge expertise across critical product categories
  • Streamline and enhance the Material Return (MR) process with focus on test protocols, reporting and trend analysis
  • Employs problem solving techniques and tools to determine root cause analysis and implement corrective action
  • Preliminary evaluation (with product engineers) of the certification requirements for projects related to new products, cost outs, supplier changes (design included) and OEM opportunities
  • Submission of RFQ’s for certification projects and review/approval of received quotes. Execute on implementation by submission of certification package to the agencies and conduct follow ups on status
  • Communicate on receipt of certification and confirm listing updates at agencies
  • Manage the quoting, invoicing and payments for the certification agencies
  • Negotiate projects costs with agencies and manage certification budget
  • Target annual cost reductions with agencies through consolidation, audit management and product obsolescence
  • Develop, drive and execute consolidation strategy related to multiple agency certifications for various product categories
  • Attends various codes & standards working committee meetings and monitors trends/developments impacting the business
  • Develop capability to drive modifications of existing standards and introduction of new product standards
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies and codes/standards bodies
  • Performs other related duties as needed and assigned


  • 4 year BSE Mechanical Engineering degree
  • The successful candidate must have 2+ years’ experience in the field of product development & risk management

Experience in the following a plus:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Quality management systems like ISO 9000 and Statistical Process Control
  • Plumbing Standards and codes; ASME, ASTM, Gas and CSA
  • Test methods and design of experiments
  • General manufacturing processes - machining, plastic and rubber molding, coating and assembly

  • Need to possess good oral and written communication skills


High level of proficiency as required to attain a 4 year BS Engineering degree


Good reasoning skills as found in a degreed professional engineer


PE is a plus


Work in Novi corporate office

Travel is required for product liability support (about 2-3 trips per month)
