Kichler, the largest manufacturer of decorative lighting in the US, is looking for a talented and motivated product Design Intern for the summer of 2019. Kichler is a leader in interior and exterior decorative lighting, landscape lighting and ceiling fans. The Kichler brand encompasses more than 5,000 products, including chandeliers, wall sconces, bath lighting, ceiling fans, under-cabinet lighting, landscape lighting, lamps and accessories.

POSITION SUMMARY:

As a Design Intern at Kichler, you will work in close collaboration with a dedicated Senior Product Designer and with Product Management and Engineering Teams to research, explore, design, and develop new and innovative designs for the various Kichler product lines, such as interior lighting, exterior lighting, and ceiling fans, and for a wide range of lifestyles, from Traditional to Contemporary. We are looking for an individual with the creativity to explore a range of new ideas, materials, and form, combined with the ability to understand the Kichler customer and to collaborate respectfully on a team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Explore a wide variety of compelling design options through sketching, rendering, and prototyping

  • Research and apply future trends in design, fashion, house wares, decorative accessories and materials to  your concepts, as outlined on the  Design Briefs from Product Management

  • Use Solidworks to create 3D models for visualization and prototyping

  • Communicate concepts and ideas through verbal, visual, and written means in presentations both informal and formal.

  • Understand the evolving needs and desires of our Kichler customers

  • Collaborate with Design, Product Management and Engineering teams to translate Design Briefs into relevant and exciting design solutions

  • Work with Kichler China Team, along with our Asia based vendors to translate designs into functional prototypes.

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Candidate should be a current undergraduate or graduate student or should have completed studies within the last six months

  • Digital proficiency in the use of tools such as SolidWorks, Keyshot, Adobe Creative Suite, and Sketchbook Pro

  • Excellent hand sketching skills (Wacom Tablet experience preferred) along with model building/prototyping skills

  • Ability to rapidly explore a wide variety of styling options (forms, colors, finishes, materials, etc.) and articulate these ideas clearly and concisely

  • A passion for design, trends, and materials and courage to explore new ideas

  • Must be team-oriented, self-motivated, possess a positive attitude, and work respectfully with others
